"10x20": THE WEEKEND MIX

HOW?

I was listening to Queen's "News Of The World," and thought about how straightforward most of the album plays compared to the band's five previous releases. It really is a basic rock and roll record, with little of the operatic and flamboyant flourishes usually associated with the band. There are many great deep cuts on NOTW, one of which, "Sleeping On The Sidewalk," was covered by Los Lobos

That, along with the just released Black Crowes covers E.P. gave me this idea.

It's self-explanatory, I think. But just in case you have read nothing at this point and went right for the zip, we have an original version immediately followed by a cover version...with one exception.

The Who have the last word, which in this case is, "YeeeeAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!"

Compare and contrast.

WHY?

Why not?

Have fun! I did.

Great idea. Love it.

Also glad to hear you enjoyed the new half-speed Who remaster. I, of course, trying to support my local record store, am still waiting for my copy ;-(

Being a grumpy old stick in the mud I usually come down on the side of the original version of a song by a favourite artist against a cover by some young whippersnapper. I mean, come on, Hounds of Love by anyone other than Dame Kate? Having muttered that, two exceptions in the mix: the Richie Havens take on the Who's chestnut comes this close. And although I didn't expect it to, Lori Carson's bash at I Saw the Light is up there with the original done by whoever that other guy is. Nicely put together mix, many thanks. Cheers!

How about a covers version of your covers version mix?

Got To Get You Into My Life -- The Beatles/Earth Wind & Fire
Muskrat Love -- Willis Alan Ramsey/Captain & Tennille
Puttin' On The Ritz -- Fred Astaire/Taco

Hallelujah -- Leonard Cohen/Everyone Else In The World Who Ever Sang a Song

Oh and I immediately realized I should have included

"Last Train To Clarksville" -- The Monkees/Cassandra Wilson

That's what I get for dashing off the comment without careful consideration!
