Dig The Stovall Sisters

The first time I heard The Stovall Sisters was on a U.K. soul and funk compilation called "Right On." The track, "Hang On In There" knocked me out. This was before Discogs, so it took some time before I tracked down the very out of print record, which happened to be their only record, 1971's "The Stovall Sisters" on Reprise.

Once I did get hold of it, I was surprised, though not disappointed to find it was mostly gospel tunes. With the exception of a few tunes, it was what I had originally expected musically, funky R&B, just like that first single.

This record has become a favorite and I had pulled it out this weekend for the first time in a long time. And just like the first time, the song "The Rapture" absolutely floored me with its beauty.

Dig The Stovall Sisters.

Hey, anybody know if Steve Simels is OK? His blog has been dormant since August 26, which is unusual, and there's no sign of Monkey Bizness.

Cleveland Jeff,
Coincidentally, I emailed him this morning saying almost exactly what you said. Have not heard back. Hopefully, all is well. I will keep you posted.

Dang, Rapture is su-weeeet. If you want to hear another circa-1971 modern gospel stunner, give https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIKJ5mmVFH0 a spin. I tried to search BW to see if you'd featured it before, but found no indication. Songs like these inspire even hell-headed heathens like me with their sheer gorgeousness.

C In California,
LOVE that Pastor Barrett record. As a matter of fact, I bought the complete boxed set that Numero Group put out this year. Hard to imagine that I hadn't mentioned it in 12 years.

Well, the dang search button wouldn't let me seek it out as 'Like A Ship'; it called up all references with 'ship', etc, so it was a bit much to look thru it!
Agreed, it's a gorgeous record!

Most excellent. And certainly fits in with your post the other day, to wit - we don't just have to search newly-made-in-2022 music to be a curious, growing music fan - there's also so much from the past that many of us have never heard, like I've never heard this and it's great.

That album was widely available in the San Fran Bay Area as they were used on a number of albums as back up vocalists. I believe they are on Norman Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky which I never tire of hearing.

Amen (ahem) to Spirit In The Sky! Some of the best opening seconds of a song in music history.
And it just gets better as it goes along.
