Rudolph Isley, 1939-2023

The Isley Brothers made a lot of records across many labels. But I think these two are the absolute funkiest. How funky? "Showdown" is so funky, it needed three bass players to bring that funk. Listen closely and you'll hear three different bass parts. Now that's funky.

Love the Isley Brothers, so I was sorry to hear about Rudolph's passing.

It's wild to me how a musician who was a part of such iconic music early in the Isleys' career (I believe he retired from music in the 80s) can pass pretty quietly, and within a day or two, if you didn't catch it that day, it's gone.

I noticed this recently when Richard Davis died. He played the bass on Astral Weeks, man! Yet I only saw his passing mentioned once in passing somewhere. Davis' bass sounds - and the music of Rudolph Isley too - will be listened to for many decades ahead, so at least they live on.

This death shit is really starting to piss me off.

By the way, if I was a betting man, I would have laid money down that an Isleys RIP would lead you to post their Rundgren/Nazz cover of "Hello It's Me." That's why I'm not a betting man.
