Numbered Saturdays

hpunch commented on BW's Saturday #3:

"I like this new numbering Saturday's feature. A song for Saturday? Am I missing another theme? I look forward to BW's Saturday #4."

Aside from personal inspiration and the need as a music fanatic to share what I love, one of the main things that has kept Burning Wood going for 15 years is the interaction. I love comments. I love comments that agree with me more than those that trash the music I love, obviously. But worse than a disagreement is silence. At least if you hate a Todd Rundgren song, I know that you listened to it and were inspired to say so. Silence feels more like "who cares?"

"There's nothing worse than indifference," a good friend once said.

I decided that once a week, Saturday, I am going to post for myself. I am BW. Saturday is my Saturday. I am not going to try and sell anything, or spend time agonizing over words and jokes and one-liners and snark, that often go ignored*. I'm just going to post music. Sometimes it could be a meme, or a video clip. But mostly, it'll be a song. It'll be posted for a reason. If you feel like offering commentary, all the better. If you don't, I'll know at least, I didn't work too hard on the post. I won't have to wonder if what I wrote made you laugh or cringe, or think, or react at all. It's just a song, posted. Boom and out.

*Have you ever seen an episode of "M*A*S*H?" One of the things that always impressed me about that show, aside from the brilliant writing, was that the characters laughed at each other's lines occasionally. Can you recall that in any other sitcom? The audience is howling at the many gags and one-liners in all your faves, from "The Honeymooners" through "The Odd Couple" and so many more. Yet, if Murray The Cop said something stupid, Felix & Oscar would just carry on. On "M*A*S*H," Hawkeye would insult Frank Burns and Trapper would laugh because the joke was funny. It's real life! People laugh when others say something funny.

Live it up. Do your Saturday any old way you wanna. The Zutons is great. And the X cover of Soul Kitchen is WAY better than the Doors. That's not much of a compliment in my book as the Doors might just be the most overrated band of all time.

Yes and yes!

Hey, I like the Doors! That said, they sure aren't aging very well, are they?

Thanks for the explanation. Another great addition to Burning Wood.. Almost as great as the addition of the comments on NOW PLAYING 2.0. The Zutons were one of those bands I often see mentioned in the British press that were a mystery to me. Really cool song. And great observation about M.A.S.H. Never noticed that.

The opposite of love isn't hate. It's indifference.

Yes, that is a fun part of MASH. On The carol Burnett Show they laughed, but they were trying not to!

Bring it on!

I haven't seen M*A*S*H in a while, but I remember that.

I finally saw a few episodes of "Only Murders In The Building" recently. There were some really good jokes, but I was surprised at first that no one laughed at them. No audience or laugh track was fine, but the other characters didn't even chuckle. They probably rehearsed a few times, and got their laughs then. I'm looking forward to watching them all, I just got a great introductory deal for Hulu. I need to see seasons 2 & 3 of "Reservation Dogs" too.

Well, count me as one who loves the Doors and loves X, and I think both are timeless. The Doors rarely sounded, to me, like 'the psychedelic 60s', other than writing songs with a free spirit to them, but even those didn't hew to the peace and love thing, nor (generally) the wah-wah/sound tropes of the day.
My buddy told me he heard that X was in the studio, and if a resulting album is as good as Alphabetland, it'll be most welcome.

I'd say the much mocked Doors are a great singles band. They're the sort of act a greatest hits set is made for. And that 2 CD The Best Of The Doors is an essential. It makes you want to check out the albums...which are indeed patchy.

"Patchy" is a perfect review of all The Doors records.
It doesn't matter how much I might be enjoying the first record or "Strange Days," or any of them, actually, there will always be a point where I say out loud to no one, "Oh just shut the fuck up, Jim!"

I never thought about it, but i LOVE that Hawkeye and Trapper laughed at each other's bits. You're so right!

And your review of the Doors is spot on. Some great songs, but "Shut the fuck up, Jim" indeed

I ventured into The Doors camp a little differently, belatedly, than most, perhaps, probably. But I was struck, upon listening, and still am, at how good the band is. The playing is spot-on, jazz-like, in their timing and precise licks.

Jim Morrison is the headliner; his reputation pulls you in. But the band is the real show and invites you to stick around for a jolly good time.

I believe the quote is, "Hate isn't the opposite of love. Indifference is."
