Your Tuesday Moment Of Zen

In a recent "What's In My Bag" video from Amoeba Records, the first thing Norah Jones talks about is a record by Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, a piano playing Ethiopian nun who passed away at 99 in 2023. I was intrigued and so I dialed the record up.

I suggest you do the same. This is absolutely stunning.

Paul,
That Mulatu Astatke set is fantastic. I first heard him when my friend's daughter played "Tezeta" on her college radio station about four years ago. I bought it immediately.

I read this book, "Unbury Our Dead With Song" by Mũkoma wa Ngũgĩ, last month. It is fantastic. It's about the Ethiopian song Tizita ("Tezeta" on Mulatu's album). The writing about music as it is being performed is especially worth reading. review

Any reason why you took down the Queen Bee post?

Jobe,
Yes. A few reasons, including two anonymous threats (which normally just get deleted, but I still have to read them), and because I don't think enough people "got" my post. That makes me lose confidence and so now I think I didn't nail it. How's that for honest?

Considering just happy Mr. Rogers shit moving forward.

Oh yes, I heard this after reading about it a while back. Stunning.

Yes, her piano music is really worth the attention. It resurfaces every few years, deservedly so. Glad it brought you pleasure as it did me.

Some more information from the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/mar/28/emahoy-tsegue-maryam-guebrou-the-ethiopian-nun-who-was-one-of-historys-most-distinctive-pianists

Glad you reminded me of her so that I actually got round to listening. One of a kind stunning.

(Try this again) Please Sal, no Mister Rogers shit. I depend on you to keep me informed on what I should be on the look out for, and what I (probably) should stay away from. Without you I wouldn't know about The Lemon Twigs. Unless Jay-Z is the one sending you the threats I would ignore them. I think that those who do "get" your post far out weigh those that don't. So KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK and thanks.
