Last year's multi-disc set from Stax "Written In Their Soul" continues to deliver the goods. This box is seven CDs filled with unreleased tracks and demos, and even with my random plays since its release, I've yet to come across a bad note.
Yesterday's discovery is a song written by Homer Banks. "Too Much Sugar For A Dime," not to be confused with the 1950 Merle Travis hit, appears twice on the Stax set, once by the author and again by staff writer and occasional performer Bettye Crutcher. Both are excellent, though I prefer Homer's take.
That this track, not to mention the other 139 unreleased tracks on the box, couldn't find its way to a slab of wax, is incomprehensible.
Now here is where I would normally go off on the state of music, make a few snide comments about Dua Lipa and Sabrina Carpenter, and then get reprimanded by a few of you for not leaving the kids alone. But I am not going to do that.

Henry Threadgill used that phrase as the title of one his albums, too. had to google the meaning - “Too much sugar for a dime” is a Southern expression and means too good to be true or more trouble than it's worth.
Both versions are excellent: Bettye's early Saturday evening and Homer's 2am Sunday. Will have to spend more time with that collection.
Also not to be confused with Henry Threadgill – Too Much Sugar For A Dime which is enough to send most of the readers into fits. Only the fearless will click here :-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98NwVTXP4nY&t=3s

So many gems in this collection, Sal, you unearth a great one.
Thanks for this reminder - I meant to get this collection but had forgotten. It's back on my list!
A lot of great songs in that set from people I never heard of before. I always enjoy making new discoveries.
sounds like a potential jerks cover when we get around to that reunion that is in such demand, if not certainly Hard Copies material.
