Rock & Roll Is Alive And It Lives In North Carolina

I've often called NRBQ the greatest live act on Earth. And after 40 years and 50 performances, I stand by that statement. But Southern Culture On The Skids can sure give The Q a run for their money. Whether playing to 10 or 110 people, and I've been part of both, SCOTS play like its their career finale. Last night in a quarter full capacity at the Brooklyn Bowl, might have been one of the best I have ever seen.

They've come a long way from surf punk instrumentals and white trash anthems, and thankfully, stopped throwing fried chicken into the audience. Rick Miller is a guitar hero. Mary Huff is a goddess with a voice from heaven. And Dave Hartman is a human metronome. Together, this band plays music you can dance to and songs you can sing, while never letting you forget, it's okay to have fun.

I know there are some fans out there, but I bet there are more who have heard very little of this band.  Get on it, toot sweet. You need to have a good time, whether you realize it or not.

I only discovered them a few years ago. I can't wait for them to make it up to Albany! They are great.

Saw them May 14 at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn (west of Chicago). Have been a long-time fan and it was the first time seeing them live. Great show and just plain fun. Glad you like them too.

I saw them in May -- they had audience members come up and dance for a couple of songs and they (still?) did throw fried chicken into the crowd. It was a great, great show, though.

These neighbors of mine are a local treasure (as was Dex Romweber). Here's to their being heard by more!

They're always a great show! I've been going to see them for years, and they've always been on. They can play almost anything I'd want to hear, they have a sense of humor, and a fine fashion sense. Unfortunately, I was out of town and missed them Saturday night. Hard to believe it was only ¼ full in Brooklyn.

How were The Woggles (I think they were the opening band)? They seem well-matched to play with SCOTS

Great live band. They play SoCal alot. Must have seen them at least 30 times. One memorable bill was SCOTS, Neko Case, Deke Dickerson & the Eco-Phonics. House of Blues on Sunset in Hollywood. Missed them a few times, usually when I had something better to do. Missed two fall 1995 shows because, on one night, Shaver was playing the Galaxy (what a great show that was! One of my top concerts. Thank God I skipped SCOTS!). On the other night I took my daughter to No Doubt at the Troubadour. Tragic Kingdoom had just come out and they were catching fire. I thought they really sucked live, especially Gwen. What an annoying performer. My daughter was disappointed as well.

Those SCOTS songs you put up are some of my favorites. Also motivated me to revisit Piper at the Gates of Dawn. I love that album more and more as the years go by.

SCOTS are fixin' to do seven California gigs in small venues toward the end of October. One of them is Alex's Bar in Long Beach which holds 178 people. I'm there and probably three others

Further California venues are:

The Siren - Morro Bay (350)
The Sweetwater - Mill Valley (300)
Bottom of the Hill - San Francisco (246)
Moe's Alley - Santa Cruz (300)
Zebulon - Los Angeles (250)
The Casbah - San Diego (200)

The Woggles were loud and really didn't do too much for me. Their covers worked better than their originals.

My band, The Crack, formed in Wilmington, North Carolina in January 1987, opened for SCOTS, and we became friends, even sharing a band member for awhile. Rick and I were interviewed together for a teen fanzine way back when.
Everything Sal says about them is true.

I've been a die-hard fan since their first full-length album, and I've seen them live a few times--which is something everyone should experience!

They put together THE SLEAZEFEST in Chapel HIll NC for a few years--which was an annual event that mixed a wide range of bands playing in college bars. I saw Dick Dale, Davie Allan & The Arrows, The Fleshtones, Nashville Pussy, The Mad Daddys, The Woggles, and of course SCOTS there.

They're a national treasure.
