A few songs caught my ears while letting the iPod do its thing, and a couple more found me in other ways.
"Baby I've Changed" could be found on Fountains Of Wayne's oddball collection, "Out-Of State Plates." There are so many gems on this set deserving of more than b-side status, many have gotten lost since its release. This is one of them.
"Heroes & Villains" is nothing short of brilliant. I know I've shared this Geraint Watkins cover before, but you might have missed it.
There were a few Al Stewart records in a recently purchased collection, and "Denise At 16" from "Bedsitter Images" stood out. Thankfully it's an instrumental, so no one gets creeped out.
I knew "Somebody Led Me Away" from Neko Case's record "The Virginian." I hadn't realized it was a cover. Written by Nashville's Lola Jean Dillon and first recorded by Loretta Lynn, this is a classic country reading. I can see the movie now.
Deep into Side Two of Bette Midler's "Songs For The New Depression" is this beautiful track written by Moogy Klingman, with backing vocals and vocal arrangements by Todd Rundgren.
Finally, I want to thank Steve Simels and his local watering hole for letting this Edel Juarez track into my life. I don't know exactly what it is, but it moved me enough to track down the whole album, which I will listen to in full today.

Geraint Watkins version of "Heroes and Villains" is brilliant and always makes me think of Louis Prima doing it. The Bette Midler track was always a favorite of mine and sounds like it could've been on "Runt".
Bette Midler and Todd Rundgren! That's something I never imagined. I love "Heroes & Villains" and that cover of it. Been a while since I listened to that FoW compilation! I don't know if it's Eden Juarez or Edel Juarez but I can't find either on my streaming music service of choice. What's the album called? But this is why I posted: your comment on the Al Stewart track "Denise at 16" -- "Thankfully it's an instrumental so no one gets creeped out" -- made me guffaw.
It's Edel, not Eden. Thanks for pointing out the typo. Oddly enough, the record has both Juarez and Juares printed, or at least the digital copy does.
I severely underrated Out of State Plates at first, thinking there wasn't much beyond Maureen and a couple of others to hang onto. There are a lot of gems on it!
Edel Juarez...I went into a deep dive...he got the music, he got the voice but I googled till my fingers bled and can't find any translation of what he saying...Will continue looking. Interesting.
The Out of State Plates is wonderful. So many gems. I was listening to the Adam Schlesinger tribute disc, Saving for a Custom Van, this week. There is a Broadway show in there.
