Know who Charles "Skip" Pitts is? How about Ben Cauley or Howard Grimes? I know some of you soul people do. That unmistakable wah-wah that opens the "Theme From Shaft?" That's Skip Pitts. That distinctive drum sound on all your fave Al Green hits? That's Howard Grimes. (Well, sometimes, it's Al Jackson Jr.) But still...
Know the Bo-Keys? They are the brainchild of Scott Bomar, and this is where you can find these legendary musicians.
The new CD hits in a few weeks. Until then, watch this, and check out Skip Pitts' guitar playing during the shoot for the first single, "Got To Get Back" with R&B legend Otis Clay.
Sal, this stuff is ultra terrific. I had heard of some of these guys but didn't know about the Bo-Keys. Can't wait to hear the new CD. Thanks for the invaluable info!
Now I'd like to do a backlog search. Any suggestions? Maybe you could send me some mp3s to get me started. Much appreciated.
Good catch! New to me. With new Jimmy Vaughn and Dave Alvin due soon, the weather won't be the only thing blistering hot. (PS-my friend is checking for a copy of At The Party)
This is so cool. Sal, your blog is the only one I know of offering the right mix of links and commentary about much of the music I dig. I love Memphis music but had no idea about this modern group. I'll be on the lookout for the next time they play my town and will see them. I'll get the LP too I'm sure. Got Booker T's new album recently (also based on your recommendation) and damn, that thing is sweet as butter.

Wow. as Aaron said.. Something to look forward to, and obviously some serious deficiencies in my record cabinet that needs fixing. Thanks.
So that's what Howard Grimes is doing these days...fabulous! I'll be checking out the Bo-Keys in future. Thanks again Sal!!!
BTW: I'm playing drums with my band Tonefactory on Saturday at P&G Cafe, if you're around.
