The New York Times arrives at my door and I rifle through the pages until I get to the obituaries. (You're quite welcome for that lob. Now hit it out of the park.) With Mojo magazine, the first place I go to, admittedly with a bit more ease and less abuse, is "All Back To My Place."
This is a one page, 3-person, short interview where, as Mojo puts it, "the stars reveal the sonic delights guaranteed to get them going."
I love this column. I never thought I would care about what actress Elizabeth McGovern liked to listen to on a Sunday morning, or the first record Paul Rodgers ever bought, yet I am hooked everytime, regardless of who the three subjects might be.
We've been communicating on these pages for close to four years now, and many of the regular participators frequently use the chat box or simply leave comments about each daily post. Occasionally though, we are steered into uncharted musical waters. I am grateful for all suggestions. But, that still leaves hundreds who have said little to nothing. So I thought this would be a good place and time to share this information with each other. It'll give us all an opportunity to tell a little bit about ourselves, and offer up some musical suggestions we might have missed along the way. (Regulars, this is for you, too.)
My answers are below, though after four years of posting, I've probably already given up more than I should have. I posted just the questions in the comments sections to make it easier for those willing to participate. Just cut and paste.
This is supposed to be fun, damn it!
What music are you currently grooving to?
What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favorite album?
I'm sure everyone will have a problem coming up with just one, but do your best. Maybe a "Ten Favorites Of All-Time" list will be in our future. For now, the first thing that comes to my mind is "A Hard Day's Night." (British edition, of course.) I won't cheat and say "The Beatles Box." "A Hard Day's Night" gets the vote. I play it the most, still.
What was the first record you bought and where did you buy it?
I have two memories. It's either "Downtown" by Petula Clark at House Of Oldies on Bleecker Street or the "And I Love Her/If I Fell" picture sleeve (which I still have) at Village Oldies, also on Bleecker Street.
Which musician have you ever wanted to be?
James Booker, without all the baggage. Though I'd be satisfied as anyone that could sit at a piano and just play some songs. I play drums, and while I love it, I'd love to be able to sit a piano and bang out anything from "Stardust" to "Rocket Man," or something like Scott Joplin's "Solace."
What do you sing in the shower?
I don't. I just agonize over everything until I'm clean.
What is your favorite Saturday night record?
Something classic. I can recall on more than one occasion putting on Traffic's "John Barleycorn Must Die," or Aretha's "I Never Loved A Man." I need something familiar, tried and true.
And your Sunday morning record?
At least twice a month, it's "Missa Luba." If you don't know it, you need to find it. It is a version of a Latin Mass based on traditional Congolese songs, sung by a Congolese children's choir. I can feel the eye rolls from some of you already, but it is truly uplifting and beautifully haunting. Other Sundays, I love Brother Jess's gospel show from New Orleans on WWOZ, or some Sam Cooke.
Your turn....

Indeed. That Mojo page was always entertaining.
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?
In the spring, a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of Elvis Costello & The Attractions. That, and whatever's in the car, so R.E.M. this week.
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
Revolver.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
Shaun Cassidy "Da Doo Ron Ron"/"Holiday", at the Korvettes on Central Avenue in Scarsdale.
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Just one? Knee-jerk answer: John Lennon.
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
I don't always sing, but I tend to think along with "Norwegian Wood", to see if I can get in and out in two minutes. (I can't.)
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
Exile On Main St. tends to please most people.
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?
Five Leaves Left.
I need some time to answer all these questions but I will give it a shot.
The first record I ever bought.....French Foreign Legion by Frank Sinatra.....really. it was a 45 and i was maybe 8 years old. It probably sounded like this on my little record player back then too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIbje9aMNuo
I don't sing in the shower
favorite album of all time.... this is an impossible question but if I have to (and it can't be the first burritos lp, or the first procol Harum lp or rolling stones now or well you get the idea) it would have to be Otis Redding Complete and Unbelievable Dictionary of Soul (and Otis Blue).
What musician would have to be James David Hood "Duck" Jamerson. I know it's a long name but you know how those southerners are. (ok I cheated a little bit)
oh music i'm grooving to pretty much everything Elizabeth Cook plays on Outlaw Country on the satellite radio station.. In particular Hayes Carl "She Left Me For Jesus" and whatever I'm playing at Star on Sunday morning.
sorry bout being out of order
I need a rest now back later to answer the last two questions
oh I bought French Foreign Legion at Wall's Record shop in Great Neck, NY.....
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?
I’m a bit of an acoustic guitar nerd and have been listening to Martin Simpson lately. The man has tone that the word luscious only begins to hint at. Think I’m kidding? Just listen to this duet with June Tabor on Richard Thompson’s Strange Affair:

WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
Has to be Sticky Fingers. I remember listening to WABC-AM, soaking in my bath tub in Woodside, Queens, and all of a sudden Brown Sugar came on. I was electrified. Never heard anything so good in my LIFE. I’ve owned the album on vinyl, cassette, 8-track and CD, and enjoy it to this day.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
Hmmm. Even though it was my brother who bought I Want to Hold Your Hand in 1964, I count it as mine. Mine, I say! All right…the 1st record I really bought myself was Simon & Garfunkel’s Sounds of Silence. No shame there, of course, but it would be even cooler to say “Wanna Hold…”. Think I bought it in Steven's on Queens Blvd.
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Oh, easy. Keith Richards. Do you know how cool I felt when I worked out Keith’s Sympathy for the Devil solo from “Ya-Ya’s”? Like a duckling imprinting on it’s mama….it’s been in my genes ever since.
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
Ok, I’m weird. I often sing John Prine songs whilst scrubbing. Hey don’t judge me…I’m still in the fat part of the bell curve.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
Changes with the weather. But, showing my age…if I only had ONE, blah, blah, blah…I guess Abbey Road.
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?
Huh. Usually I prefer a pot of coffee, the Sunday Times and a lot of quiet. But I need to make a plug for my favorite jazz album of all time: Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges Play the Blues Back to Back. I would consider it a personal favor if people on this blog would listen to this album. Duke, Johnny, Sweets Edison, Jo Jones. Heaven. Listen to Johnny and Sweets trade riffs:

Great idea for the blog, Sal.
regards,
RichD
Hey Sal,
I always read those Mojo Page Threes too. I’ve thought about what I’d say … now you have forced me to action! Thanks
What music are you currently grooving to?
From my iTunes recent plays it looks like some of the usual Burning Wood suspects -- Jon Cleary, Brendan Benson and some old Beastie Boys and right now I’m listening to the new Live From Daryl’s House Daryl Hall with Butch Walker.
Sometime at the end of last year Sal you posted a few “Six Packs” mini playlists of six songs. Since then I do a sixpack a week and share with family and a few friends. The upcoming weekend is the first long weekend and the traditional start to summer. In Canada the Victoria Day holiday is known as May 24 (even though it falls on the 3rd Monday not the actual birthday of Queen Victoria). And Canadians call a case of beer a “Two Four.” So … this week’s sixpack is becoming a holiday two four and I’m making a playlist of Canadian songs that skew to fun, pop, party and more than a few old cheesy songs from 70s and 80s radio -- Loverboy, Cory Hart, Pagliaro, Kim Mitchel, … -- my kids won’t know what hit them!
What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favorite album?
Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska if I’m in a black mood and Born to Run if not (I know that’s two but …)
What was the first record you bought and where did you buy it?
The first album I bought was Blood Sweat and Tears’ self titled album. I bought it at The Disk Shoppe in the Wellington Square Mall in London Ontario. But since that was the city's first mall (as opposed to outdoor plaza) we of course called it “the Mall.”
Which musician have you ever wanted to be?
Nick Lowe. I’m not yet Nick’s age but I can see him from here. If I could have written a song like “What’s So Funny” I’d die pretty happy. But seeing Nick today still so cool and so comfortable in his skin ...
What do you sing in the shower?
“Hey Jude” -- just wait for those “Judy … Judy … Judy”s
What is your favorite Saturday night record?
Joel Plaskett has a three song EP, Make a Little Noise, with three perfect power pop anthems -- “A Million Dollars,” “Nowhere With You” and “Make a Little Noise.” If those songs don’t put a smile on your face and get you in a Saturday night frame of mind you better call 9 1 1.
And your Sunday morning record?
Sunday morning calls for gospel or country. I often play a gospel collection -- maybe done by the BBC -- called Jesus is the Answer -- and it has a bunch of the greats -- Swan Silvertones, Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Staple Singers, ….
On the country front the only song that beats Kris Kristofferson’s “Sunday Morning Coming Down” is Fred Eaglesmith’s “Water in the Fuel” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF-83t5Wr_I
Now that I think of it I probably need redemption more than I need heartbreak but …
Thanks for getting me to do this exercise.
Have a great May Two Four!
Favorite album - Led Zeppelin IV. Such a great folky, bluesy, English Countryside vibe.
Currently listening to (for the past few years) - Stew & The Negro Problem. Please...listen...to...this...guy.
Don't know if it's all the drugs or what, but I'm having difficulty remembering the first record I bought 45 or so years ago. I commend those of you that can. Randy
I'll have an answer by this afternoon. What Fun!
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO? Dr John's new record, and various late 60s, early 70s R&B/soul/funk
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
T. Rex - Electric Warrior
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
Rolling Stones Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) - given to me by my parents in 1966, I have no idea why or where they bought it, probably Korvettes. First one I bought on my own was Herman's Hermit's There's a Kind of Hush, definitely at Korvettes.
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Todd Rundgren
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
New song lyric/melody ideas
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
Exile on Main Street
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?
Dusty in Memphis
Currently: I've been hunting down some semi-obscure R&B guys from the fifties & sixties, like Chico Leverette & The Satintones, Ray Agee, and Tarheel Slim.
Album: Doug Sahm & Band.
First Record: Gimme Gimme Good Lovin', by Crazy Elephant. Nearly 45 years later I still like the song. I seem to recall buying 45s in a department store, possibly Sears or JC Penney, in my central Illinois hometown.
Musician: Doug Sahm. I like country, blues, and old fashioned rock and roll, and he did all three, often on the same album.
Sing in the shower: No. I want my wife still there when I get out.
Saturday night: Los Lobos, The Neighborhood.
Sunday morning: Bobby "Blue" Bland, Two Steps from the Blues.
The ones that immediately pop into my head:
First record ever purchased: Johnny Cash at San Quentin.
Favorite record of all time: Darkness On The Edge of Town
Favorite Sunday Morning Record: Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?
I seem to be on perpetual shuffle at the moment reflecting the unsettled nature of life at present. For music on the move I often find myself loading up a Burning Wood mix. (Why do other people's record collections seem so much cooler than mine?)
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
Hot Tuna - Burgers. That album is high on my fire and calamity rescue list. Just looking at the sleeve takes me to a happier place.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
Could be false memory syndrome, but my cheatin' heart tells me it was The Monkees (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone. I also believe I acquired an album of Western theme music at some early stage in my development - but I might not mention that. Where? Likely some bijou record emporium in town - either that or Woolworths.
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Leo Kottke - I'd love to be gifted with such natural drollery and to spin that kind of magic out of a 12-string guitar. Or Joe Strummer. Minus the being dead part.
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
Depends how thinly you wish to stretch the definition of 'sing' - but last time it was Do Ya - Todd version.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
The Outlaws first album always hits the spot for me. Hey! Where did everyone go?
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?
Possibly some Gillian and David, or possibly something cool and jazzy.
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?
The new Brendan Benson album. Not as fantastic as the last one, but almost as good.
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
"Headquarters" by the Monkees. Really.
Only *barely* edging out "Get The Knack".
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
The first record I bought with my own money was "Damn The Torpedos" by Tom Petty. I'm sure I bought it at Harmony House in Michigan. There may have been a 45 I bought prior to that, but that Petty album is the first one I can remember spending all my money on (though I have a vague recollection, I bought "The Wall" at exactly the same time...)
I rarely listen to Tom Petty any more, though...
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Neil Young. Without a doubt.
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
Nothing. Get in, get it over with, get out...
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
Here's where I'll put on "Get The Knack" if I'm looking to get moving before I head out. "Abbey Road" if I'm having people over...
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?
Cheating to say it, but the Steely Dan box set -- on shuffle.
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?
Currently loving the Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s “Twenty Dozen”, multiple Iguanas CDs, Trombone Shorty’s “Orleans & Claiborne”, Springsteen’s “Wrecking Ball”, Smithereens’ “2011”. Also, after Levon Helm passed, I found myself listening to a lot of The Band as well.
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
For years now, I have had a very consistent Top Three: Springsteen’s “Born to Run”, Van Morrison’s “Into the Music”, and Michael McDermott’s self-titled CD. There have been other temporary favorites, but they have never cracked this trinity. If push came to shove however, Born to Run would be the one.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
I can’t remember which was first: “Sgt Pepper” or the Beach Boy’s “Endless Summer”. Both were purchased at the late Flip Side records in Downers Grove, IL.
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Most musicians are such an insufferable lot or are somehow damaged, why would I want to subject myself to that? If only to give an answer, I have such high respect for Allen Toussaint and Irvin Mayfield for their integrity and their contributions to the music world that I would probably pick one of them.
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
The Supremes “You Keep Me Hangin On”. My wife busted me once, and I’ve never been able to live it down.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
If we’re grooving, probably The Iguanas’ “Nuevo Boogaloo” or Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen.
For Rock, probably something classic & comfortable like Bob Seger’s “Live Bullet”. Other times, it’s a Motown compilation or some of the Stax Record’s box set. On Saturday nights, I don’t want to think too much, I just want something that goes nicely with a good buzz.
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?
“The Man & His Music” by Sam Cooke. I also really like “Brother’s Keeper” by the Nevilles.
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?
Gerry Rafferty - City to City reissue
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
Elvis Costello - Get Happy
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
Brandy, You're a Fine Girl - Looking Glass at the National Record Mart
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Stevie Wonder
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
I don't. One of the many reasons I'm not a musician.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
Alex Chilton - The Replacements
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?
Into the Mystic - Van Morrison
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?Probably what's getting the most spins is a Beach Boys combo: Sunflower/Surf's Up. Man, there's a lot of good stuff on there. Also, I'm totally to say but in the spirit of honesty, I'm really enjoying the boxed set: Sugar Sugar: The History of Bubblegum Rock. Manfred Mann's "My Name is Jack" sure brings back a lot of memories
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
Tough one, but I'm sure I wore out the grooves on Sergeant Pepper, as well as the original Lovin' Spoonful's Greatest Hits and Poco's "Pickin' Up the Pieces," but favorite? I suppose Pepper with Tommy, the Band's Brown Album and "Blood on the Tracks" or Blue Rodeo's Five Days in July behind but in the race. This list could change with more thought, however.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
Hard Day's Night from Modell's in East Meadow. Cost me $3.99.
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Jake Shimabukuro
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
don't.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
I'm an old fart. my Saturday nights aren't at all like those implied by the question.
And Your Favorite Sunday morning record: Probably something quiet. But I don't have a favorite, it's just a matter what I've most recently picked up. Could you go wrong with Arthur Alexander on a Sunday morning?
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?
I'm also on a Who kick right now, hard. I'm a guitarist, and I suddenly came to a realization in the last month or so about how fucking cool Townshend's guitar approach is. Also how a lot of his style compliments what I do, naturally. Really into any live tracks I can find, especially.
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
*sigh* Hard one. I'll just fall back and punt with The Wild, the Innocent and the E-Street Shuffle. It feels, to me like Bruce on the cusp of figuring out exactly who he wants to be, as an artist, while still embracing that spastic seaside kid he was on the first album. Plus, fucking Incident...gets me every time.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
My recollection is a copy of Lou Reed's New York on cassette during an unending family road trip. Mainly because I thought the cover was cool. That said, I have a shameful feeling it was Bunker & Garcia's Pac-Man Fever.
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Springsteen is the big one. I want to sing like that, play like that, and have a band that amazing. It's changed over the years, however, as I, and my tastes, have. John Lennon, Keith Richards, James Hetfield.
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
That is kind of a ridiculous question. Does ANYBODY sing the same song in the shower all the time. Usually, it's whatever is stuck in my head at the moment, even one of my own tracks I'm working on. That said, Baba O'Riley comes up a lot.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
Zeppelin II. In my book, their best. That said, this is another place where I would answer differently in many situations. For example, I almost put in The Sword's Warp Riders, which I just fell in love with. It certainly feeds the metalhead that is still a big part of me, while also capturing a classic rock vibe (It reminds me of Thin Lizzy a lot, at moments) that I'm just loving now.
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?
Zakk Wylde's Book of Shadows, which I think is one of the most underrated albums ever. Great songs, great vocals, great playing, free of his usual bombast. You may write this off as "Ozzy's Guitarist," but give a couple of tracks a listen. It's great stuff. Runner up: Rodrigo Y Gabriella's self-titled debut. The Latin vibe mixed with rock and metal influences just works for me when I'm in a "relax" mood.
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?"Have A Good Time, But Get Out Alive!" by the Iron City Houserockers
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM? "Rubber Soul"
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
"Last Train to Clarksville" at G.C. Murphy's
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE? Bob Dylan
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER? The Ramones
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD? "Hot Rocks"
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD? anything by Stevie Wonder
What music are you currently grooving to?
Ella Fitzgerald, Chuck Prophet, Goldfrapp, Ella is super groovy!
Favorite Album
Well it's a Beatles album of course. Not saying it's their best, that would be another one, but this one has a hold on my heart forever, A Hard Day's Night.
First Record
September of My Years. (not when it first came out of course). Yep. At Two Guys with my babysitting money, I was quite young to be buying Sinatra's recorded, musical, mid-life crisis.
Musician
Tal Wikenfeld, she plays my second favorite instrument, Is super talented, quite accomplished. Plus I want to be up there with Jeff Beck during those amazing versions of " A Day in the Life".
Shower or bubble bath (ha)
Well, something I can't actually sing in real life-or would sound ridiculous singing, like "Trampled Under Foot" by Led Zeppelin. Though often I find "Since I Don't Have You" popping into my head during a shower. Not sure why.
Saturday Night
"Summertime" and "Having a Party" by Sam Cooke, "Bye, Bye, Love" Everly's, and Everything But the Girl's version of "Tougher Than the Rest", "Racing in the Street" BS...Sat is a musical night.
Sunday
"Sunday Morning" Velvet Underground. Sometimes "Only Living Boy in New York", if I'm driving, "Two of Us" by that group from Liverpool. Sometimes Louis Armstrong.
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO? Very fresh: "The Wandering - Go on now, you can't stay here" (Luther Dickinson and some american south female singers, recorded in three days, so good), "CeU - Caravana sereia bloom" (Brazilian singer songwriter, great tropical mix of influences) and "Sara Watkins - Sun midnight sun" (she fiddles, she croons). Very old: "Lalo Schifrin en Buenos Aires" very rare 1970 live album, film music maestro in small quartet situation, awesome, "Toots in Memphis", nuff said and a splendid compilation on Document records "Yonder comes the blues" which traces blues back to African tribal chanting and goes from there.
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM? "Chuck Prophet - Brother Aldo". No contest. Hands down. Great songwriting with respect for the past, but entirely it's own. Recorded for 800 bucks, released in 1990 on a small british label still in demo form, but all the better for it. Alejandro Escovedo's fav record too, as Chuck himself told me once. The only record that came close to this one's status would be "Songhai" first one (1988,red cover) by Ketama/Toumani Diabate/Danny Thompson unique gathering. Or "Talk talk - Spirit of eden". Small cheating detected here, bear with me.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
First 45rpm Status Quo's Rockin' all over the world. Loved it as 12 year old, love it now. First album, don't really remember, probably Elton John's A single man. Saw Elton on Muppet show and was duly smitten. Bought them in a town nearby in a store that sold furniture and technical hardware, but also had a record section (70's were great in what used to be former Yugoslavia).
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE? I'm not a musician, but for tha sake of it, Dave Pirner of Soul asylum. Cool and collected. The kind of dude who'd say things like "why would I need to know 25 chords, when 7 will do just fine. Now let's rock."
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER? Don't. Soap and water.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD? Something rockin' but of course, like Izzy Stradlin's first solo record with JuJuHuounds or Why's Elephant eyelash on Anticon or Camper Van Beethoven, or Alice Cooper's records from his lost years, which would be late 70's / early 80's, anybody remembers "Special forces"?
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD? Lately "Max Richter - 24 Postcards in full colour" or some Erik Satie.
Thanks for reading. As you were.
Izzy

John Entwistle
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
A "golden" oldie in the shower (ok, bad joke) but probably some sort of standard I can mockingly sing alone.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
"Exile on Main Street"
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?

WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
John Leventhal. Multi-instrumental talent, superb producer, and best of all, I'd be married to Rosanne Cash...

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD? Anything Queen
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD? Anything Queen
What music are you currently grooving to?
While my music is usually on shuffle, currently I'm playing "Rockpile-Live at Montreux 1980." When Adam died, I went on a Beastie Boy jag, which unless they come up on shuffle will last me until the next one passes. Roy Rogers, the slide player, got a session a few days ago. Usually, something or someone will trigger me and I'll begin a day of exploration finding connections.
What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favorite album?
This was a tough one, and I finally narrowed it down to two, Spirit-The Family That Plays Together and the winner, The Jeff Beck Group-Truth. I never heard a guitar played that way, or a singer match the selection so well. Still haven't and it holds up still 45 years later.
What was the first record you bought and where did you buy it?
I was seven years old and had "earned" a dollar somehow. My Dad was a manager for the A&P in Belmar, and they had a rack jobber come in and put up a small rack of singles and some LP's. I spent about most of it on the single "Don't Be Cruel b/w Hound
Dog." I played that record on a little RCA Victrola over and over, as only a seven year old kid does. My Uncle, who was into Brubeck, teased me in that sarcastic way that Berle, Benny and Hope would about rock on the TV. I soon moved on to the Top 40 radio in New York, and didn't get back into Elvis for the longest time. But like the genre itself, he started it all for me.
Which musician have you ever wanted to be?
I'd like to play any instrument beside air guitar or drums. But I think a piano player would be the choice of them all. From Christmas to juke joints, you can play anything.
What do you sing in the shower?
I don't sing, but sometimes the brain rattles with a refrain that pops up.

Great post and responses...
What music are you currently grooving to?
Ron Sexsmith, Long Player Late Bloomer. It’s a year old, but I’m going to see him tonight so it’s popped back into my playlist. Choosing a Ron Sexsmith album is like shooting fish in a barrel, there isn’t a bad one!
What, if push comes to shove, is your favourite record?
Surf by Roddy Frame. A slightly obscure choice I know, but it’s one that I can put on at any given time and enjoy. There are so many great albums that I could list, but this one works for me as it’s never been played to death on the radio so I can still be surprised by the littlest thing.
What was the first record you bought and where did you buy it?
The 45 to Dancing in the Dark by Springsteen. The flip side was Pink Cadillac. Bought it at a Zellers store in the country.
Which musician have you ever wanted to be?
Steve Winwood. I’m a singer/songwriter who is a multi-instrumentalist, so I’m just jealous. If I could have his voice, that would be enough alone. But throw in the piano, organ, and guitar skill? That would be a dream come true. Paul McCartney comes a close second for similar reasons.
What do you sing in the shower.
Nothing. The acoustics in my shower aren’t worth it.
What is your favourite Saturday night record?
This is the hardest one to answer. When I’m along, I’ve 25,000 songs on my Ipod to choose from. However I’m never on my own on a Saturday night and my wife only likes about 1/3 of the music I do so I’ll pick from that list. If it’s late Saturday night, I’ll go with Elvis Costello’s North. It’s romantic and mellow and goes well with a scotch on the rocks.
And your Sunday morning record?
Neil Young’s Silver & Gold. Play it on a Sunday morning and you’ll see why.
1. What music are you currently grooving to?
Lately, I am finding that I have to play the Rave Ups’ "Book of Your Regrets," start to finish on my iPod as I commute around the city. For a quick fix of mood, I go with John Gorka’s “I’m from New Jersey,” or some Southside Johnny, also a Bruce Bootleg from the River sessions.
2. What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favorite album?
Hard to say, but I guess my desert island disc is Derek and the Dominoes “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.” It’s quite possibly the best heartbreak album ever and I love Bobby Whitlock’s voice mixed with Clapton’s, and the interplay between the musicians is great throughout.
3. What was the first record you bought and where did you buy it?
Got my first Emerson rstereo system. I went to Bradlees with birthday or confirmation money as I recall and I bought three records (still have on Vinyl): Jay Black and the Americans’ “Greatest Hits,” James Taylor Greatest Hits,” and the Bee Gees’ “Main Course.”
4. Which musician have you ever wanted to be?
I’d like to be Eric Clapton, Pat Metheny, Sonny Landreth, David Lindley, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, Bill Frisell, Steve Forbert, John Hiatt, and James Taylor for a day each so I could learn how to play and absorb some lessons.
5. What do you sing in the shower?
It’s usually whatever “ear whig” my nine year old has been singing. It can be painful to hear me sing Adele.
6. What is your favorite Saturday night record?
If it’s sexy time with the missus, its Roxy Music and “Avalon.” If I’m ruminating by myself, I like some Michael Hedges’ “Aerial Boundaries” to navel gaze by with a beer or two chaser, sometimes three or more.
7. And your Sunday morning record?
Put on WFUV or the Beatles and get to making breakfast.
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?
Carolina Chocolate Drops latest (never got into previous albums), Girlyman and Michael Kiwanuka. Feeling the acoustic groove, enjoying vocal harmonies. This is no doubt related to playing in an acoustic band.
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
Ugh. Graceland? Don't have a cooler response, but if you ask for a straight up 40 minute choice, that't eh first thing that comes to mind.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
I used to be able to walk to a record store when I was kid in Canadian suburbia and I bought Dirty Laundry by Don Henley. Thought it was trenchant social commentary, and I liked the "kick em when they're up" refrain.
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Paul McCartney. I also have serious respect for Sheryl Crow for taking whatever success she had and using it to duet with all of her musical idols. Smart woman.
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
The Letter.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
A mix of old and new dance songs that the kids and me and the wife all like.
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?
Best of Ella's Songbooks. Or Getz Gilberto. Or Skylarking.
I reserve the right to change all of my answers within 5 minutes.
Late to the party, but here goes:
CURRENTLY? Wrecking Ball, Girl Called Eddy, and Momofuku are in the car's CD player, but mostly I'm grooving to whatever the Shuffle Gods deliver. The last 5 cuts were Bill Evans - When I Fall In Love, Thunderclap Newman - Something In The Air, 5th Dimension - California Soul, Lucinda Williams - Essence, and Little Village doing a live version of Memphis In The Meantime.
ALL-TIME FAVE? Layla by a nose over Who's Next.
FIRST BOUGHT AND WHERE? I started with a couple of novelty 45's, Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead and Winchester Cathedral. First non-novelty might have been Buy For Me The Rain, an early single by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. I was listening to my older siblings' Beatle records but my first LP purchase was the 5th Dimension's Up Up and Away. KMart.
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE? All of 'em.
SHOWER? In the AM before work, nothing... still waking up. On weekends I'll sing along with whatever is piping through the sweet overhead speakers we added in the bathroom during the renovation.
SATURDAY NIGHT? If I'm lucky and the kid is asleep and the wife isn't and sexytime is a possibility, it could be Avalon like another poster mentioned. Or Bill Evans.
SUNDAY MORNING? Bebel Gilberto's Tanto Tempo, or Getz/Gilberto. Julian Bream's Guitar for Relaxation also gets the occasional Sunday morning spin.
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?
A bunch of r & b collections that I bought at the Louisiana Music Factory a couple of weeks ago. New Chuck Leavell. New Dr. John. "Rock of Ages," in memory of Levon. (And I pulled out the first Stax box for "Duck" Dunn the other night, and will listen to the expanded "Bad Girls" for Dorchester girl Donna Summer over the weekend.)
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
Sophie's Choice would be easier, and I'm not gonna agonize over it, as I find rankings of of this type kind of pointless. (Off the top of my head, I'm gonna go with "What's Going On?")
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
Johnny Cash - "Original Golden Hits" (on SUN, bitches!), at a long-defunct store in Lebanon, NH that I can't recall the name of. Still have it.
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
You mean BESIDES Johnny Cash? I had a real Steve Earle fixation in my yoof, but thankfully didn't emulate his worst habits, and eventually grew out of it. Now that I'm properly middle-aged, I wouldn't mind having been Edward Kennedy Ellington, or Cab Calloway, or Dizzy Gillespie, or hell, Mr. McKinley Morganfield himself.
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
I don't. But I drive an old car w/o a CD player, and keep the car radio tuned to the local classic rock station. I DO sing in traffic, which earns me some funny looks sometimes.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
If I have company, whatever the hell they want to hear. If I'm hanging by myself, the possibilities are endless, but most likely would include some Brian Jones-era Stones, some early Prince, some classic Zimmy, and some electric Miles. (But it could be anything, really...)
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?
Not much for music on Sunday, but like Sal, I am a devotee of WWOZ's morning gospel program. Otherwise, maybe some Bill Evans or Glenn Gould, or some acoustic blues. - Bill Buckner
