The Mighty Hannibal: 1939-2014

James Timothy Shaw, better known as the socially conscious, turban-wearing soul singer The Mighty Hannibal died a few days ago. I loved Hannibal's music, which at times grooved along with the best of the 60's soul music we're all familiar with, but occasionally veered off into unknown, almost psychedelic territories.

I don't have a deep history with Hannibal's music. My first introduction to his music was in 2003 through The Cool Jerks, a band of friends who covered mostly obscure R&B and soul tunes. I was sold immediately. Here's one that we did.

I met Hannibal in New Orleans some years ago. I asked if I could take a picture with him and he said, "Yeah. Let me get my money." He did. Check out his hands in the photo above.

That is a one great memory.

Check out "Hannibalism." It's insanely good.

All 3 cuts were great. Will definitely check him out. It makes you wonder how many artist like him are out there with treasure waiting to be discovered.
