Return Of The Mommyheads

If memory serves, I saw the Mommyheads live for the first time opening up for Crowded House at CBGBs in 1987. If that's not entirely accurate, the other memory I have is seeing a band called Pajama Garden which featured members of The Mommyheads opening up for Crowded House at CBGBs in 1987. My point is, The Mommyheads have been around for a long time.

They have a new one out called "New Kings Of Pop" and I dig what I am hearing. The Mommyheads are solid players, with a lot of good ideas, like the title track with its really clever lyrics and obvious nod to Queen. Or, "Speck Among Giants," which sounds like a cross between Yes and XTC. These two tracks are the standouts. I wanted to find more to love but at press time, did not.

If memory serves, I have always been impressed by The Mommyheads records, but can't recall any one that left me truly satisfied. "New Kings Of Pop" may finally do the trick. I'll have to get back to you. Until then, give these two excellent tracks a spin and see where they take you.

I bought a couple Mommyhead cd's from the crates at NYCD at the original above ground location. I thought they compared favorably to XTC. Glad to see they're still at it. Thanks for the reminder.
