I was 17 years old and living in Pompano Beach Florida. I was the youngest of six kids but the first to buy my own stereo and the first to really buy more than an album or two (we had about five in the entire house before I got busy). I almost never listened to the radio (which sucked in South Florida) but Y-100 was on and Tina Turner's cover of "Let's Stay Together" floated over the air. I stopped immediately when she began singing and listened to the whole thing transfixed. I doubt I knew it was originally by Al Green but I did know it was a great song and a great performance. Who the hell was THAT, I wondered? Happily, the deejay actually told me who it was and to keep an eye out for her album coming out some time in 1984. I did. Great artist.

What a life story. What an artist. A generational star. R.I.P.

RIP Tina. Damn it is right.

Playing my 45 of "Proud Mary" over and over and over again on my tiny little "Victrola".
Their version of the song remains my family's anthem.

The Acid Queen scaring the shit out of me.

Ann-Margret and Tina Tuner performing together. I was exhausted after watching that!

All the women in my office in 1984 singing "What's Love Got to Do With It?" in our Tina
voices.

That Live Aid performance with Mick Jagger!

Regret, regret, regret for not every seeing her live. Damn it.
