No Sir, Don't Mean Maybe

Talk about a great record...

Hale & The Hushabyes was a name given to various session musicians and vocalists, masterminded by Phil Spector protege Jack Nitzsche, and including Sonny & Cher, Darlene Love, Jackie DeShannon and Brian Wilson. Lead vocals on this absolutely stunning 2:20 worth of pop heaven is speculated to be Edna Wright, sister of Darlene Love, with the sweet falsetto provided by Brian Wilson.

I don't think I've mentioned this on Burning Wood before today, but if I did, I don't care. This deserves to be played loud and often. It is a perfect example of a lost art, making a record. The song, "Yes Sir, That's My Baby," in and of itself is pure novelty. But when put in capable hands, becomes a mini-masterpiece of sound.

The 45 is a sorely missed product of music's long gone salad days, and few could put together such perfect singles as the people involved in Hale & The Hushabyes.

ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO- STREET SONGS OF LOVE

Nobody doesn't like Alejandro E. And nobody has been as consistent as Escovedo, delivering yet another kick-ass record, full of heart and sweat and hooks and balls.

JOHN FOGERTY - CENTERFIELD (25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION)

Some celebration! 2 lame bonus tracks are added to "Centerfield" in honor of this record's 25th anniversary, "My Toot Toot" and "I Confess." That's it.

INDIGO GIRLS- STARING DOWN THE BRILLIANT DREAM

These two chicks have been getting under my skin since day one. I just don't get it. To me, they are the musical equivalent of Dane Cook. I hear their songs and consistently ask myself, "Did they just say that? Did they think that was clever?" This is another 2 CD live set, coming 15 years after their first 2 CD live set, "1200 Curfews." Have I mentioned how I just don't get it?

ROBBY KRIEGER- SINGULARITY

I guess there are some people out there who care about this Door. I really don't. Never did. Love the first album. Enjoyed Ray and Robby on "Live From Daryl's House." This? Meh. (I listened just so I could say "Meh.") It's kind of snoozy and all over the place. He wants to be Al DiMeola or Craig Chaquico or something. Bad production, too. I swear I heard hiss.

THE WALLFLOWERS- LOOKING THROUGH YOU-ANOTHER COLLECTION

Stray tracks from various soundtracks, singles and tributes are gathered together for this *timely* collection. If it had the "One Headlight" duet with Bruce Springsteen from that MTV thing, I would have spent the bucks . But of course, the more favorable "U.S. Radio Edit" made the cut instead.

1. Heroes
2. I'm Looking Through You
3. The Beautiful Side Of Somewhere (acoustic version with strings)
4. Lawyers Guns And Money
5. Just One Breath Away
6. I Started A Joke
7. Into The Mystic
8. Nothing To See Here
9. 6th Avenue Heartache (acoustic version)

Bruce Springsteen & the E-Street Band: London Calling

Burning Wood does the work so you don't have to.

Here's an audio rip of the just released Hyde Park DVD.

The bad news is that you get "Outlaw Pete," "Bobby Jean," "Waitin' On A Sunny Day" and "Glory Days" all in one show.

The good news is...everything else!

Have a good weekend.

These songs are some of my favorite 10cc moments, though two are just Godley & Creme, and one of those two, "Art School Canteen" might be my favorite of all.

I didn't bother with the hits. You already know them, and I have one very loyal reader who just can't deal with "I'm Not In Love" anymore. It's absence is for you.

"Three hours before my plane leaves, that nice Mr. Doucet invites me to stand in a room with other guests somewhere in the suburbs of New Orleans. The door is closed. By a miracle, many songs are performed--everyone's playing at the once--it's like the old days! Yet strange to tell--Cajuns singing "Wooly Bully?" Toes will tap, critics will wink conspiratorially, old men in Bermuda shorts will swear F.P. Sylvester's Playboys did it all in 1911.

Vive le rock & roll Cajun!!

Richard Thompson

Produced by Sonny Landreth, here is Michael Doucet & Cajun Brew from their eponymously titled, 1987 LP, performing the aforementioned "Wooly Bully," as well as a rousing take on RT's "Woman Or A Man," with Thompson providing some of his usually mind-blowing guitar playing.

I am ashamed for not playing this record at least once a day.

10cc: It's Because...

The U.S. had its first real experience with 10cc in 1975, with a little radio hit called "I'm Not In Love," a "love it or hate it" monster. It certainly didn't represent the British band, whose two prior releases owed more to the glammy theatrics of bands like Queen and Sparks, than the soft, almost soulful sounds of the current hit.

Like most people, my first experience was the hit. But it was the album it came from, "The Original Soundtrack," that made me a believer. Nothing on the record sounds like "I'm Not In Love," which by the way, falls on the "love it" side for me.

What the radio version of "I'm Not In Love" was missing was a piece of music in the middle and a coda, about two minutes of music actually, that suffered a most inconsiderate cut for the single. The "big boys don't cry" lyric, which changes the sentiment of the song, underscored by one of the most subtlely brilliant bass lines, were left on the cutting room floor, along with a beautifully dramatic swell of vocals at the end, making a great epic, into a strange, clumsy and unlikely AM hit.

From the opening operetta on Side One, "Une Nuit A Paris," Lol Creme, Kevin Godley, Eric Stewart, and Graham Gouldman, collectively known as 10cc, precipitate a major jaw-dropping, with their impeccable vocals and no holds barred approach to making records, taking on characters usually reserved for a Renoir film. The hit follows, right before the clavinet-driven funk of "Blackmail." Side Two is just as strong with some Brian Wilson-inspired pop in the form "Brand New Day," and a finale right out of a Fellini film "The Film Of My Love."

I think "The Original Soundtrack" is a lost classic that everyone should own.

You know the hit, so here is "Une Nuit A Paris."

And as a bonus, "Channel Swimmer," the great Graham Gouldman b-side to "I'm Not In Love."

ROLLING STONES- STONE IN EXILE (DVD)

This is the commercial release of the full length, Cannes-previewed documentary on the making of...that album. Deluxe edition comes with a CD featuring 1:42 of "Tumbling Dice," from the 1972 release "Exile On Main Street." Super-deluxe edition features a bonus DVD of "Marat/Sade:The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade" ....and two stickers.

Now that I've gotten that out of my system, this is priced to move and well worth your time. If you've invested as much time as I have in the Stones and this record, you may find yourself yelling at the screen for all that is not shown. But that doesn't make this cool little film something to pass over.

HERBIE HANCOCK- IMAGINE PROJECT

The legendary pianist, who inexplicably skated away with the 2008 "Album Of The Year" Grammy for his snoozefest of a tribute to Joni Mitchell, is back with some more crap. India-Arie, Dave Matthews, Pink, and Juanes are just some of the people hired to suck the credibility out of this living genius. (Seriously, if you make it to the end of "The Times They Are A'Changing" without looking for a straight-razor, let me know.)

CYNDI LAUPER- MEMPHIS BLUES

I'll believe anything, even a Cyndi Lauper blues record with people like Allen Toussaint, B.B. King, Charlie Musselwhite and Ann Peebles on board. I bit. First song, great production, band seems to be hitting a groove and then...SHIT!! It's Cyndi Lauper. I like her. I really do. But, this does not work...AT...ALL!! Poor B.B. is relegated to shadowing Miss Lauper's screeching on "Early In The Morning." That's it. Bad. So bad, it made me say "Bad!"out loud to no one. Cyndi may just wanna have fun, but I suggest actually owning a blues record before tackling a blues record. (And please, if anyone sends me a diatribe defending Cyndi and her blues roots, and how she studied with Sippie Wallace, I'm pulling out the profanity.)

VINCE NEIL- TATTOOS & TEQUILA

I'm a sucker for covers, and Vince Neil pushed my hard rock buttons with this collection. I saw the tracklist--Cheap Trick, Sweet, Aerosmith, The Hollies(?)--and I was all in. I listened, so you won't have to.

VARIOUS ARTISTS- BROKEN HEARTS & DIRTY WINDOWS: A TRIBUTE TO JOHN PRINE

The absolutely wonderful John Prine is...honored? I'd like to think there was some sincerity and genuine love behind this collection, but I'm feeling like it's just an indie cash in. Deer Tick "featuring" Lis Isenberg? Pinch me.

Track Listing For Broken Hearts:

02. Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band - Wedding Day In Funeralville
03. My Morning Jacket - All The Best

Todd On Monday : The Walrus Was Todd

I believe "A Walk Down Abbey Road" was the brainchild of Alan Parsons, a successful pop star, but also a staff engineer at EMI Studios, with engineering credits on such records as "Dark Side Of The Moon," and both "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be." It also reeks of inspiration from Ringo Starr and his "All-Starr" tours, born approximately 8 years earlier, where Starkey, our fearless leader, and some carefully chosen super and not so super stars, banded together for a night of hits from each of its members, as well as a sprinkling of Beatles' tunes. In the case of this tour, it was a full set of both.

The tour in 2001 featured Parsons, Todd Rundgren, John Entwistle, David Pack of Ambrosia, as well as band support from Godfrey Townshend (no relation) on guitars and Steve Luongo on drums. It had "phone it in and pick up your check" written all over it. But instead, audience members were treated to 2 plus hours of some great musicians having a genuine blast on stage. At least that's how I remember it.

It's easy to yak all over this, but if you leave your contemptuous snorts at the door, you may actually enjoy yourself, especially such highlights as Ann Wilson's ballsy version of "I'm Down," or hearing Todd's distinctive backing vocals on a handful of Ambrosia hits. (Guilty pleasures for some, genuinely wonderful tunes for me.) As for the Beatles' material, this isn't a set of note for note recreations, and not all of it works. The Fab Faux cornered the market on that. It is a lot of fun though, and Alan Parsons' vocal debut on "Blackbird," while possessing some charm, is closer to Paul Heinreid than Paul McCartney.

Speaking of contemptuous snorts, as most Todd fans know, Mr. Rundgren's caustic wit often rises to the surface when he gets a bit twitchy. For this particular show, which was recorded in Saratoga on June 19, 2001, he is on fire. Hilarious, actually, making some of the banter in-between, just as entertaining. Of course, if you're not a fan of any of these people, y'all have to come back tomorrow now, ya heah!

"Spring Cleaning With Neil Finn" : THE WEEKEND MIX

With a new Crowded House CD, "Intriguer" just out in Australia, and due out here next month, I thought I'd gather together an hour's worth of odds and enz, from the Split Enz/House member, singer/songwriter Neil Finn. He's been a fave since I first heard "I Got You" way back when.

I'm not about to review the new record just yet, though after a few days with it, it did make me feel like I may need a few more days with it. More on that closer to the U.S street date.

Rather than put together a collection of songs that were easily attainable elsewhere, I went the oddities route, sort of a "spring cleaning" of rarities. These tracks were pulled from live fan club CDs, videos, BBC radio broadcasts and stray compilations. Some tracks date back as far as 1986, with a couple recorded at CBGBs, while two tracks from "Intriguer" are from a BBC concert aired just last month.

Hope you dig it.

Imelda May, Where Have You Been All My Life?

Prior to hearing her sing "Lilac Wine" on the most recent Jeff Beck album, I knew nothing of Imelda May. Seeing her perform as Beck's opener on Monday, has made me officially obsessed.

She's from Dublin, and her first record "Love Tattoo," which seems to be out of print already, sounds as if Wanda Jackson and Mary Ford had a few shots of Wild Turkey at a Cramps listening party and decided to make some music afterward.

Then there is this, which I only heard about and didn't see when it aired.

Her new CD, "Mayhem," gets a September release. Here is the first single and video, "Psycho."

And finally, maybe you'll dig this live show I dug up from April, recorded live at The Luminaire in London, on 4/21/10.

Glad I got that out of my system.

ARIF MARDIN- ALL MY FRIENDS ARE HERE

Last recording by the legendary producer with help from Bette Midler, Chaka Khan, Norah Jones, Dr. John, and David Sanborn for starters.

STEVE CROPPER & FELIX CAVALIERE- MIDNIGHT FLYER

GASLIGHT ANTHEM- AMERICAN SLANG

The Goo Goo Dolls have been doing this for years, and no one's going apeshit over them. This is an average rock and roll record by an average rock and roll band and man, if they don't sound exactly like The Goo Goo Dolls.

BUY IT, IF YOU MUST--->http://www.amazon.com/American-Slang-Gaslight-Anthem/dp/B003FK8V7G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1276601131&sr=1-1

CHRIS ISAAK- LIVE AT THE FILLMORE

I've always liked Chris Isaak. I don't think he's ever really made that "great" record, but he's got more "really good" records than most. He really shines in a live setting, so I give this a thumbs-up.

JOHN MELLENCAMP- ON THE RURAL ROUTE 7609 (4 CD BOXED SET)

Labeling John Mellencamp's "On The Rural Route 7609" a box set would be a misnomer on several levels. In format, it is much more akin to a lavish book and is in fact, not packaged in a box. With 54 songs, 17 of which are previously unreleased on any Mellencamp CD, on 4 discs, the set is thoroughly annotated by award-winning music journalist/historian Anthony DeCurtis. Also included within its 72 pages are numerous evocative photos reflecting Mellencamp's transformation from pop idol to his current status as transcendent singer/writer whose work is celebrated, sometimes as a painfully honest musical reflection of hard scrabble midwestern values. Mellencamp songs from all phases of that career are included as are special guest readings by Academy Award (R) wining actress Joanne Woodward as well as from Dr. Cornel West, best selling author, lecturer and commentator.

Unlike standard issue box sets, "On The Rural Route 7609" is not a collection of hits and near-hits in chronological order. Rather, each of the discs is programmed as if it were a free-standing album with shared themes and a sense of flow that offers one a compelling context to listen from start to finish versus defaulting to searching for the most familiar tracks. While there is certainly a wealth of well-known material, a significant number of tracks are offered that, while less familiar, are equally significant in terms of providing an in-depth picture of the Mellencamp's spectrum of creativity. Those tracks juxtaposed to signature songs long-associated with Mellencamp on the four "albums" in the set give long-term Mellencamp fans and newer listers alike, a more complete and insightful view of the artist's role as a writer and artist whose catalog of songs and recordings glow with substance and nuance.

"On The Rural Route 7609" is a musical journey that sheds new light on an American musician who, as both a songwriter and and social activist. Mellencamp found his true voice as he followed his heart and mind over the course of a career that, after an improbable start, has spanned four decades and is reflected in the selections heard "On The Rural Route 7609". "On The Rural Route 7609" is a singular way to discover John Mellencamp again.. arguably, for the first time.

OASIS- TIME FLIES (1994-2009)

Another hits collection from one of the most-overrated bands in history. I really do like their first two albums, but I think that's enough.

BUY IT--->http://www.amazon.com/Time-Flies-1994-2009-Limited-DVD-Box/dp/B003JZT2AW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1276601230&sr=1-1

TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS- MOJO

It's been 8 years since the last Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers album, and "Mojo" finds the band sounding great, if a bit too relaxed. After 3 solid listens, I'm still not overwhelmed by the songs themselves. There are some winners--"First Flash Of Freedom," "I Should Have Known It," and "No Reason To Cry"--and some losers--"Don't Pull Me Over." And as a whole, it sounds like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. But "Mojo" is in desperate need of "that" song that jumps out at you and bites you on the ass. Even some of the weaker records like "Let Me Up" and "Echo" had "Jammin' Me" and "Room At The Top" or "Swingin'" respectively. Good record this "Mojo." But I wanted great! Like, "Mudcrutch" great! "Mojo" is consistently tepid.

Sandinista: The Little Album That Couldn't

It's that time again. Time to visit my old friend, "Sandinista." We haven't gotten along for years and I'm not sure why I think we'll get along now.

What do you do when your favorite artists haven't amassed enough of a catalogue to keep you satisfied in their absence? I can only listen to "The Clash" and "London Calling" so many times. "Give 'Em Enough Rope" is solid, but too weak to build a relationship on. "Combat Rock" is nice, but we're more acquaintances than friends. What do you do when you need more? This happens occasionally with my favorite artists. Sometimes, there just ain't no more.

I usually go back to the album that didn't do it for me first time around. It often sounds fresh, like a new release, since I never gave it much thought on the first pass. Or in the case of The Clash's "Sandinista," the 21st pass.

I've tried time and time again to listen to certain records by favorite artists that left me cold the first time around, just to see if I was missing something. It's rare when I don't come up feeling the same way. I still haven't given up on Joe Jackson's "Blaze Of Glory" and David Bowie's "Young Americans," though all these years later, I still don't like them. I did see the light, thanks to the persistence of some of you, and now really enjoy McCartney's "Chaos & Creation In the Backyard," a record I absolutely hated on first listen. That was worth my time. Thank you. The patience paid off.

"Sandinista" seems to be the record I've given the most chances. It has so much to offer...right?

The way we watch "The Godfather" or "It's A Wonderful Life" or some other epic on Christmas Day, I seem to have that one day each year when I pull out this 3 LP monster of mostly still unfamiliar tunes, just hoping that this time around will be the pass to kick my ass. And every year, about 15-20 minutes in, I find myself drifting. I say "unfamiliar," because it seems that no matter how many times I try, I can still only remember the five or six "hits."

The record is dense, and seems to slug along. Like a lesser John Cassavetes movie, "Sandinista" deserves your time and respect because of those involved, but it really needed someone to say, "Ok, cut, DAMNIT, CUT!"

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on this record. If you'd like to defend it, tell me why, so I can finally enjoy it, too.

I'd also love to hear your choices of records that you wish you liked more because you think you're supposed to. Dylan's "Time Out Of Mind" anyone?

Ch-ch-ch-ch-CHANGES

Starting this week, there will be some changes made on the pages of Burning Wood.

*Todd Rundgren Mondays will now only happen once, or if I am inspired, twice a month.

I don't want to run out of material, and quite frankly, interest seems to have waned.

*New Release Tuesdays will list more releases, but have less commentary.

I realize that this feature is very helpful to those who still buy CDs occasionally, but it has become increasingly more difficult to get copies to listen to and review, and to be honest, there is just too much I'd rather not listen to.

I will feature 1-3 releases that have struck a chord, good or bad, and then list everything else with links for purchase.

*Outside Contributors

When I first started Burning Wood, I had a vision that others would contribute. I still hope for that to happen. Concert reviews, record reviews, suggestions...if you would like to submit something, please do so. Just keep the abuse to a minimum.

See you Monday

"Jon Cleary: Piano, Bass, & Drums" : THE WEEKEND MIX

I've had many people ask me my thoughts on the HBO series "Treme." I've spent a lot of time in the great city of New Orleans, and though I may know a bit more than most who have only visited once or twice, I'm no expert. I will say I enjoy watching "Treme," but I'm not sure I love the show. I'll expand on this in a later post.

With just two more episodes from completion of its first season,"Treme," if nothing else, has excelled in the music department. More than one reader has suggested a "Weekend Mix" featuring the best music from the show. I don't feel quite comfortable with that since HBO's website has links to where to purchase the available music, and NolaFunkNYC has a nice show by show breakdown of all the music used. But if you've been a long time reader of Burning Wood, all you need to do is search "New Orleans" above, and you will find plenty of mixes made prior to the premiere of "Treme," with many of the songs that ended up in the show.

In the meantime, I give you this absolutely monster set of music, broadcast live on the great WWOZ in New Orleans, from Lafayette Square in New Orleans, back on April 14th, 2010.

The great Jon Cleary has been touring with something he calls "Piano, Bass, & Drums," with an album, I believe, being planned for a future release. (I hope that's the case.) The bass in this trio is played by James Singleton. The drums are played by Doug Belote. I was about to say, "It's hard to find three better musicians in...." but I stopped myself. When you're in New Orleans, your cab driver probably plays drums better than most with a recording contract. So I'll just say that this trio is something truly special. James Singleton's work with Astral Project alone, is worth your time, while Doug Belote's grooves have been heard with everyone from Trombone Shorty to David Egan to Marva Wright. I'm hoping you are already familiar with the great piano work of Mr. Cleary.

If It's Tuesday, It Must Be Street Date: 6/8/10 (THE OLD & CRANKY EDITION)

AGAINST ME!- WHITE CROSSES

Here's what my friend G.T. had to say about this:

"Just heard a most horrible song, Against Me!'s (Seriously? An exclamation point? I'm getting old and cranky.) "I Was A Teenage Anarchist" on the radio. If you feel compelled to write a POP song about the subject, then no, you were not."

"I was a teenage anarchist
But then the scene got too rigid
It was mob anekatips.com mentality
They set their rifle sights on me
Narrow visions of autonomy
You want me to surrender my identity
I was a teenage anarchist
The revolution was a lie"

CHRISTINA AGUILERA- BIONIC

Jon Pareles said this, "This is the way to ring tone sales and radio play, until the next sexbot struts off the assembly line."

WANT IT?--->http://www.amazon.com/BIONIC-DELUXE-Explicit-Christina-Aguilera/dp/B003G4DFRC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1275996332&sr=1-1

THE CURE- DISINTEGRATION (3 CD DELUXE EDITION)

"3 CD edition includes a remastered version of the original album and a 20 track disc of outtakes and demos. The third disc contains an expanded version of the live album Entreat, containing live versions of every song on Disintegration recorded during a 1989 three-night stand at London's Wembley Arena. You also get a 20-page booklet with previously unreleased photos and art and a period overview from Cure frontman Robert Smith. Smith is responsible for compiling, producing, and supervising the mastering of the whole shebang."

BUY IT--->http://www.amazon.com/Disintegration-Deluxe-3CD-Cure/dp/B0030U1TLQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1275996541&sr=1-1

DEER TICK- BLACK DIRT SESSIONS

Citing Neil Young and Townes Van Zandt as influences, John McCauley, the voice behind Deer Tick, has a raspy drawl that almost works, on this not bad collection of Americana...I guess. I mean...not really. I honestly don't find any of these overhyped "Deer" bands interesting, but I'm trying (and failing miserably) to lose the cranky reputation. This sounded good at the start and got increasingly less listenable.
You could get the whole download for $3.99, should you want it.

GET IT--->http://www.amazon.com/Black-Dirt-Sessions-Deer-Tick/dp/B003G7DSGC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1275996581&sr=1-1

(I hate the Fleet Foxes. Just sayin...)

HANSON- SHOUT IT OUT

They write some pretty hooky shit, I'll give'em that. The pop is there, but so is a bit of R&B. Legendary Funk Brother Bob Babbitt makes an appearance, as well. (I didn't turn it off, if that says anything. And I liked it a helluva lot more than "Tinted Windows.")

BUY IT--->http://www.amazon.com/Shout-Out-Hanson/dp/B003HE2B6C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1275996700&sr=1-1

KRISTEN HERSH- CATS & MICE

My friend A.K. threatened me with this, "If you like anything off this piece of shit, we're through." Well, I can't say I've heard anything, so I'm safe for now.

BUY IT--->http://www.amazon.com/Cats-Mice-Kristin-Hersh/dp/B003J73P9E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1275996741&sr=1-1

JEWEL- SWEET & WILD

Oh boy...

THE LA'S- CALLIN' ALL (4 CD BOX)

This is just plain offensive! One admittedly classic record in 1991, and over 20+ CD reissues since, featuring remixes, demos, remasters, original running orders, the "Mike Hedges" version, b-sides, UK imports, Japanese imports, 2 CD deluxe editions, and now this---"4 CDs of the band's remaining unreleased rarities & outtake recordings, which are being officially released for the first time on one comprehensive set. Also includes previously unheard live recordings fom London s Town And Country Club in 1989 & The Marquee in 1991. Packaged hardback box with a 60 page booklet with extensive liner notes by journalist and author Will Hodgkinson as well as never seen before photos of the band by Paul Cox. 95 tracks."

This reminds me of the joke, or maybe it was a Simpsons episode, where a new Starbucks opens inside a Starbucks.

IT'S HERE--->http://www.amazon.com/Callin-All-Box-Set-Las/dp/B003AYBCLY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1275996779&sr=1-1

TEENAGE FANCLUB- SHADOWS

I've always found Teenage Fanclub to be just a bit overrated...JUST A BIT. Good records all, but nothing ever hit me with the same intensity as Big Star or even Badfinger, who they are so often compared. "Shadows" has some really pretty stuff going on, even if some of it sounds a bit like America. Still, a welcome release, worthy of your time.

BUY IT--->http://www.amazon.com/Shadows-Teenage-Fanclub/dp/B003HE2BLW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1275996986&sr=1-1

VILLAGERS- BECOMING A JACKAL

Villagers are just one man, Young Dubliner Conor J. O'Brien. And this one man show is a beauty from head to tail. There is a bit of an early Paul Simon influence here, both in his voice and his songwriting, at least that's what I'm hearing, and these 11 tracks will seep into your system for good. Great stuff.

BUY IT--->http://www.amazon.com/Becoming-Jackal-Villagers/dp/B003H6Z0IQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1275997234&sr=8-1
